The dredging of the Tuross Boat Ramp

On the past weekend four separate groups of boaters over a hour and a half that where going to launch at Tuross ramp decided to go elsewhere (Narooma or Moruya) to launch their boat. Anecdotally this has been happening all too often. At Christmas it was more than apparent and lead to great frustration for boat owners trying to launch and retrieve.

Turning visitors away from Tuross and sending them elsewhere hurts businesses in Tuross and affects us all, not only directly immediately in the back pocket now, but in the future as well.

When we get a decline in business we get a decline in our local economy, no cafes, no shops, no services, no trades …. people don't want to come here any more and when they go elsewhere businesses, houses and land loose value. It really isn’t rocket science.

Do you feel that it is important to keep this boatramp servicable? Have your say:

DREDGING OF TUROSS BOAT RAMP
EUROBODALLA SHIRE COUNCIL

Thank you for your email received 29 June 201 1 requesting that dredging of the Tuross boat ramp
be undertaken.
The extent of sand build-up at the Tuross ramp has increased in recent weeks.
The lake entrance is currently wide, causing high tidal movements and significant movement of
ocean sands within the estuary. Any dredging undertaken now would need to be far more
extensive than the minor maintenance dredging last undertaken by excavator in 2009 (when tidal
movements were low). There are no funds allocated within Council's 201 1-2014 Management
Plan for this purpose.
After meeting with concerned residents and businesses in May this year we wrote to relevant State
agencies. We continue to work with them to identify appropriate solutions as well as explore
funding options.
If you require further information please contact me on (02) 4474 1293.
Yours faithfully

It seems a pity to me that council takes this matter so lightly. The email sent to me was by an Engineering Administrative Trainee and was part of a mail merge bulk email.
There are no funds allocated within Council’s 2011-2014 Management Plan for this purpose.
Why not?
From the Eurobodalla Update published on the 24th of June the following “This year, the Environment Levy that appears on your rates notice will raise $791,000. This will be combined with significant grant funding from the NSW and Australian governments and be used to provide the Eurobodalla community with a range of environment services such as landcare, coast and estuary management and noxious weeds programs.”
Estuary management???? Would that be including boat launching facilities?
Or this “Rates charged to businesses differ to residential rates in that a proportion of the revenue charged will be used by Council this year to contribute to the cost of tourism, visitor services and CBD improvements.”
Tourism, well perhaps the migration of fishermen to other areas doesn’t reflect on Tourism.
Visitor services………oh yeah, I guess that fishermen aren’t visitors and council don’t include being able to launch your boat as a service.
And then this “Your rates bill is made up of a number of separate rates and charges. It includes your General Rates which will raise nearly $21 million in 2011/12 (nearly half of Council’s General Fund revenue) and which help pay for the operation, maintenance and renewal of community wide facilities such as roads, bridges and footpaths, cycleways, boat ramps and jetties, public toilets, parks and gardens and drainage, rock walls and cemeteries.”
Did I just read BOATRAMPS????? If our rates are going into maintenance, then why has it not been budgeted into the plan for the next 3 years?
I look at it this way, if one of our local roads got a pot hole, or washed away it would get fixed. It may not have been budgeted, but it would never the less be fixed. Our boat access is the same.
Why spend so much on trying to attract visitors to the area only to turn them away with poor facilities when they get here?
Tuross will become a ghost town.

Tuross boat ramp blocked by sand; residents want action
JEANNE MEDLICOTT

THE Tuross boat ramp has become virtually unusable because of the amount of sand that has built up around the ramp.

The built up sand is the result of several floods that have happened throughout the year.
